A good base in 99 Nights in the Forest is a ring of defenses around a strong campfire, with storage inside and choke points outside.
The standard layout
- Campfire core — everything is built within its light radius.
- Wall ring — one layer early, two layers once the Ram starts appearing.
- Trap lanes — traps on the paths enemies use, not spread evenly.
- Storage inside — shelves and crates next to the fire, so defenders restock fast.
Walls: the basics
- Walls stop the Deer’s minions and Cultists, but Ram charges through — keep a repair stack of wood.
- Reinforce weak fence sections before the Ram picks a lane.
- Gaps are fine for shooting; open lanes are not.
Traps
- Line attack paths with traps rather than walling every meter.
- Re-arm traps between nights — a spent trap is a hole in your defense.
- Later traps (once unlocked at the bench) can handle the Bear; early traps mostly stall.
Shelves & crates
- Shelves and crates are cheap storage that keeps food and materials safe and close.
- A food buffer of several meals per player prevents starvation mid-siege.
- Keep upgrade materials (wood) in a separate crate so builders don’t strip the food storage.
Night-watch rotation
- One player guards while the other restocks — both moving at night is how bases get overrun.
- Assign lanes before dusk: east/west or wall/trap duty.
- Call out Ram charges early so the builder can react.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Building too far from the fire | Keep everything inside the light radius |
| One big perimeter | Multiple small rings beat one huge ring |
| No repair stock | Keep wood crate accessible from inside |
| All players fighting | One watches the fire at all times |
